What is Safer Space

Safer Space is the European Cleaning Sector’s premier Certification for Contractors Committed to Delivering the Highest Standards of cleaning and hygiene. It is an annual assessment of the processes carried out at a facility and means that the contractor delivering the Accreditation process has been through a robust process of training and passed an Audit process on how to use the latest techniques and products to sanitise a building. Improving the health and wellbeing of all.
Safer Space was established in 2018 with two of the founders being British Cleaning Council Board Member Philip Morrish and Cleaning Industry Standards campaigner Roy Winters, in response to the lack of a formal standard by which facility managers could judge the competence of their cleaning contractor. Achieving Safer Space Certification means the contractor has been trained and assessed in the use of specialist sanitisation techniques including the correct use of electrostatic sprayer technology.
Contractors are assessed annually to ensure that they have the most up to date knowledge and comply with the best practice. Only Certified Contractors are authorised to issue a site-specific Accreditation that a building is a “Safer Space”. In all other circumstances Safer Space will need to randomly attend and assess a site to ensure the effectiveness of the processes being carried out. All these processes are challenged by an independent advisory board of industry and marketplace experts.
Just as humans are becoming more resistant to anti-biotics, pathogens are also becoming resistant to the myriad of sprays being utilised across environments. Many branded disinfectants mask the problem as well as creating harmful legacy issues (public health & environmental) in their wake. Under the Safer Space banner, we aim to destroy the infection-causing pathogens at source thereby reducing the risk of becoming infected in the first place in the most sustainable and cost-effective fashion.
The worldwide Covid19 pandemic has brought the new realities of infection control to our doorsteps. This virulent and highly infectious disease has brought into sharp focus the need for proper hygiene protocols to help stop the spread of dangerous pathogens.
Public Health is the rightful motivation, however, in the rush to mitigate risk, best and safe practices were set aside/ignored amidst the panic/stampede. Governments and businesses are advocating and adopting practices that, in the long run, will be counterproductive. The build-up of harmful chemicals being sprayed/ released into environments may prove detrimental to Public Health in the medium to longer term.
The Safer Space concept was developed in response to the global over-reliance on antibiotics. Hitherto relatively easily treated infections are becoming resistant to modern medicines on an exponential basis. How many times do we visit the doctor to find that the original prescription does not work? Bacteria, viruses, and pathogens constantly evolve and mutate to survive, and thus dangerous superbugs/viruses are born.

The Value of Safer Space

Accredited companies can provide insights to facility decision makers in ways that enables them to understand, evaluate and justify their investments in creating ‘Safer and Healthier Environments’. Historically, cleaning and hygiene/infection control has always been viewed as a non-recoverable cost to businesses. Correct hygiene and infection control is economically efficient and, thus, a relatively modest investment produces substantial returns.
Although there are many ways to generate cost savings through proper hygiene we focus on the following benefits:

1.Reducing the risk of workplace and environmental acquired infections
2.Reduce absenteeism (Average employee takes 8 sick days per year pre Covid19 pandemic)
3.Increase presenteeism (Improve attendance by at least 46%)
4.Lower HR and absence processing costs (Hidden costs of absences)
5.Improve productivity/output (Healthier environments = happier and healthier workers = increased
output)
6.Image enhancement (The Safer Space Accreditation gives confidence to all facility users)

Be Safer Space Approved

The cleaning service industry is one of the largest and most dynamic service industries in the world. In many cases their focus has been on the visual and not necessarily infection prevention.
The industry’s breadth and high degree of fragmentation are driven by low barriers to entry and only minimal differentiation. Consequently, these services are largely cost driven. This cost-centred focus has led many contractors to cut corners to remain competitive.
The introduction of the Safer Space standard together with a demonstrable cost saving outcome will now influence facility decision makers. Bright and shiny is no longer adequate. Health and Safety are now the most desired outcomes.
With the increased focus on sustainability and public health protection, progressive firms are adapting a more holistic approach to hygiene/infection control. Facility managers can achieve the highest standards with true savings by employing a certified Safer Space contractor using approved Safer Space products.

Safer Space Key Points

• Response to global over-reliance on/resistance to antibiotics
• Preventing transmission of infectious disease-causing pathogens at source
• Prevention is Better than Cure
• Clean is no longer relevant without Safe
• The world is obsessed with Symptomatic treatment of disease and environmental pathogens
as opposed to eradicating the causes and prevention
• Cleaning provides visual comfort by removing stains, visible dust, dirt, and organic material
• Disinfection and Sanitisation kills germs, pathogens, and viruses
• The overuse of branded and popular, yet ineffective, “disinfectants” are causing harmful legacy
issues including bacterial superbugs and increased risk of respiratory diseases etc.
• Give confidence and reassurance to people that you are upholding the highest of hygiene and
public health standards
• Certify contractors and approve product
